Operation Anagram

'Anagram' was a British deception operation to cover the movement of Australian formations from the Middle East to the Far East and Australia by promoting the 'story' that the preparatory concentration of the Australian forces was for an amphibious assault on Crete (January 1942).

The undertaking was planned and executed by Lieutenant Colonel Dudley W. Clarke’s 'A' Force in Cairo, and was so successful that the Germans reinforced their garrison forces in western Crete.
