Operation Barrister

'Barrister' was a British and Free French unrealised plan for an operation against the major naval base at Dakar in French West Africa (23/25 September 1940).

The object of this undertaking, previously designated as 'Black' (iii) and 'Picador' (i), but finally implemented as 'Menace', was for the Free French Force 'M' under Général de Brigade Charles de Gaulle to sail from the UK on 31 August with a largely British naval escort and refuel at Freetown, Sierra Leone, before steaming back to the north to take Dakar against what was anticipated to be only passive Vichy French resistance.
