Operation Canny

This was a British unrealised plan for an amphibious assault by a Indian brigade on Akyab island in the Arakan western coastal region of Japanese-occupied Burma (1943).

Designed for the seizure of Akyab, 'Canny' was schemed in conjunction with the 'Nibble' overland assault. Like 'Nibble', 'Canny' was to be undertaken by an element of the Indian 14th Division, commanded successively during 1943 by Major Generals W. L. Lloyd, N. M. S. Irwin, C. E. N. Lomax and A. C. Curtis, and both the amphibious and overland operations fell within the scope of the somewhat larger 'Probation' three-stage effort to retake Rangoon.
