Operation Gangway

'Gangway' was an Allied unrealised plan, in association with 'Mustang', for an unopposed landing directly in Naples during the autumn of 1943 with the support of the government of capitulated Italy (summer/autumn 1943).

The plan was cancelled on 27 July 1943 before any order of battle or detailed plans had been formulated, but together with the similar 'Barracuda' was to have depended on a rapid overland advance by Allied forces to seize this vital port so that substantial reinforcements could be delivered by sea into the theatre for a major advance to the north before the Germans could recover their military balance after the Allies' supposedly unexpected armistice with Italy.
