'Gizo' was a German operation against partisans operating just to the south of the Pripyet marshes in the German-occupied western USSR as these now posed a severe and increasing threat to the German military build-up before 'Zitadelle', which German commanders knew to be their last chance to regain the strategic initiative against the Soviets (March 1943).
