'Marchioness' was a British deception undertaking in which an essentially negative assessment of Italy’s imminent political and military future, after the loss of her North African empire, was purportedly sent by Anthony Eden, the foreign secretary, to the British ambassador in Chungking, the capital of nationalist China, and then revealed to the Japanese via the 'Purple Whales' disinformation channel (May 1943).
