Operation Opernball

opera ball

'Opernball' was a German air raid on London in south-eastern England (1/2 November 1940).

On this night 80 twin-engined bombers of Oberstleutnant Hans Korte’s Kampfgeschwader 55 flew toward the British capital and in the process drew the British night-fighter forces to the south, which facilitated the flight of another 58 bombers, spearheaded by the Heinkel He 111 pathfinder aircraft of Hauptmann Kurt Aschenbrenner’s Kampfgruppe 100, to attack Birmingham without meeting any but the lightest opposition. The British casualties for the night were 123 killed and 382 injured.
