Operation Pierson

'Pierson' was British initial objective for Lieutenant General B. G. Horrocks’s X Corps of Lieutenant General B. L. Montgomery’s 8th Army during 'Lightfoot', or the 2nd Battle of El Alamein (24 October 1942).

Extending along a north/south line just to the west of Kidney Ridge, 'Pierson' was to be reached by Major General R. Briggs’s 1st Armoured Division and Major General A. H. Gatehouse’s 10th Armoured Division by dawn on 24 October after advancing through the corridors cleared by the infantry formations of Lieutenant General Sir Oliver Leese’s XXX Corps. The southern and northern parts of the objective were held respectively by Generalmajor Gustav von Vaerst’s 15th Panzerdivision and Generale di Divisione Gervasio Bitossi’s 133a Divisione corazzata 'Littorio' of Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel’s Panzerarmee 'Afrika'.
