Operation Prometheus

(Greek mythological hero)

'Prometheus' was a German naval undertaking to relocate several warships from Germany to the northern part of German-occupied Norway (8/12 December 1942).

In this undertaking, the heavy cruiser (ex-pocket battleship) Lützow and the destroyers Karl Galster, Theodor Riedel and Z 31 were moved from Gotenhafen on the Baltic coast to Norway. Except for Karl Galster, which remained at Trondheim after suffering damage in heavy weather, the German ships reached Narvik on 12 December.
