Operation Rheinschiff

Rhine vessel

'Rheinschiff' was a German attempt to use commercial vessels operating on the Rhine river for the clandestine transport of troops down the river for a coup-de-main attack on the bridge over the Waal river, a distributary of the Rhine river, at Nijmegen in the Netherlands within 'Gelb' (10 May 1940).

The undertaking was stymied by the alertness of Dutch customs officials.
