Operation Ruhr Pocket

'Ruhr Pocket' was a US deception to persuade the Germans to hold troops along the line of the Rhine river in the Ruhr pocket by suggesting that Lieutenant General Leonard T. Gerow’s comparatively newly established US 15th Army was about to attack Köln on the pocket’s western face (28 March/9 April 1945).

This facilitated the encirclement and destruction of the Ruhr by Lieutenant General William H. Simpson’s US 9th Army and Lieutenant General Courtney H. Hodges’s US 1st Army of General Omar N. Bradley’s US 12th Army Group.
