Operation Throat (ii)

'Throat' (ii) was the British-led seizure of Mayotte island, in the Comoro islands group to the west of the northern tip of Madagascar, from the Vichy French (2 July 1942).

The British ships involved in transporting and supporting the small landing force were the light cruiser Dauntless, seaplane carrier Albatross and destroyers Foxhound and Griffin.

It had been planned that the islands should be developed as a small base from which patrols by four Consolidated Catalina flying boats could be flown against U-boat activities in the northern part of the Mozambique Channel, but the decline of U-boat efforts in this area resulted in a decision not to proceed with the development of the originally planned base.
