Operation Vigorous (i)

'Vigorous' (i) was a British naval search for German supply ships supporting German merchant raiders and U-boats in the area of the Canary islands group (27 June/5 July 1941).

The submarine Clyde departed Gibraltar and headed to the west but, as a result of an identification error, was attacked by the escort destroyer Avon Vale in the Strait of Gibraltar and sustained some damage. However, the boat was able to continue on her mission and patrolled the area of the Canary islands group for a German supply ship reportedly due to supply a U-boat on 30 June. The boat discovered nothing, and returned to Gibraltar on 5 July.
