Operation Walter (ii)

'Walter' (ii) was a British two-brigade attack, by Major General L. G. Whistler’s 3rd Division of Lieutenant General Sir Richard O’Connor’s VIII Corps within Lieutenant General Sir Miles Dempsey’s 2nd Army, on the German positions round village of Vaudry near Vire on the south-western edge of the Allied 'Overlord' lodgement area in the Normandy region of German-occupied northern France (9 August 1944).

The opposition was found by Generalleutnant Richard Schimpf’s 3rd Fallschirmjägerdivision and elements of SS-Brigadeführer und Generalmajor der Waffen-SS Heinz Harmel’s 10th SS Panzerdivision 'Frundsberg' under the command of Generalleutnant Eugen Meindl’s II Fallschirmkorps within SS-Oberstgruppenführer under Generaloberst der Waffen-SS Paul Hausser’s 7th Army.
