Operation Brunhilde

(German mythological heroine)

This was a German programme to comb replacement formations in home garrisons as a means of locating personnel for front-line formations (late 1942/middle 1943).

An example of the process can be found in March 1943, when Generalleutnant Wilhelm Kohler’s 282nd Division was created out of drafts provided by Generalleutnant Richard Baltzer’s 156th Reserve-Division and Generalleutnant Otto Schilling’s 182nd Reserve-Division.
