'Freedom' was a US undertaking to recover, from Bulgaria, American prisoners of war, most of them airmen whose aircraft had come down in Bulgaria in the course of attacks on the Romanian oilfields and installations at Ploieşti, who had been incarcerated before that nation’s change of allegiance from the Axis to the Allied alliance on 9 September 1944 (1945).
