Operation Kriemhilde

(legendary German heroine)

'Kriemhilde' was a German programme to create combat formations and units from the quick-reaction forces of Generaloberst Friedrich Fromm’s (from 21 July 1944 Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler’s) Ersatzheer (replacement army) within days of the development of any emergency (November 1942/44).

The first such undertaking took place on 9 November 1942 as the situation on the Eastern Front, where Generaloberst Friedrich Paulus’s 6th Army was trapped in Stalingrad, began to worsen radically.
