Operation Sandmann

sandman

'Sandmann' was a German and Croat operation against the partisan forces of Josip Broz Tito in the puppet state of Croatia in Axis-occupied Yugoslavia (29 October/3 November 1942).

The objective of the undertaking was the destruction of partisan groups (probably elements of the 5th 'Krajiski' Brigade), which had escaped from 'Kozara', in the area round Bosanski Novi and Dvor in western Bosnia.

The German contribution comprised elements of the 721st Grenadierregiment and 714th Pionierkompanie of Generalleutnant Friedrich Stahl’s 714th Division, and the Croat contribution two companies of the 4th Ustase Battalion, elements of the 8th Artillery Group, and one mountain battery of Pukovnik Arnold Redelstein’s 2nd Mountain Brigade.

Only the operations order for this operation survived the war, and there is therefore the possibility that the operation may have been cancelled.
