'Uniform' was a British naval operation within 'Coat' and therefore just before 'Judgement' to reinforce Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham’s Mediterranean Fleet (7/10 November 1940).
The operation was schemed as the best way to pass the battleship Barham, the heavy cruiser Berwick, the light cruiser Glasgow and the destroyers Encounter, Gallant, Greyhound and Griffin from Admiral Sir John Tovey’s Home Fleet via Gibraltar (whence they were at first escorted by ships of Vice Admiral Sir James Somerville’s Gibraltar-based Force 'H') along the length of the Mediterranean Sea to join the Mediterranean Fleet at its main base in Alexandria on the north coast of Egypt.
The opportunity was also taken to reinforce the garrison of Malta with additional men and guns carried in the warships.
