This was a German attack by Generalleutnant Robert Martinek’s 7th Gebirgsdivision, of Kenraaliluutnantti Hjalmar Siilasvuo’s Finnish III Armeijakunta (corps], in the operational area of SS-Brigadeführer und Generalmajor der Waffen-SS Matthias Kleinheisterkamp’s SS Division 'Nord' in the centre of the Lapland sector on the Finnish front (9 August 1942).

The undertaking took the form of an advance from the area to the east of Lake 504 near Niato Waara hill to take the commanding 'Pilgrim Height' from the occupying Soviet forces.
