Operation Ostbau

east construction

The 'Ostbau' was a German high-priority programme for the reconstruction and revitalisation of the railway system in the German-occupied parts of the western USSR (October 1941/1942).

The programme was designed to ensure that by 15 March 1942 the Soviet railway system had been upgraded to the German standards of gauge and other factors for a high level of operability under the worst of climatic conditions.
