Operation Tatzelwurm

(cat/snake creature in Alpine folklore)

'Tatzelwurm' was a German sub-operation within the 'Störfang' seizure of Sevastopol in Crimea by Generaloberst Erich von Manstein’s 11th Army (17/18 June 1942).

von Manstein ordered General Erik Hansen to use all of the five German and Romanian divisions currently controlled by his LIV Corps in a surprise assault on the northern perimeter of the Soviet defences held by Vitse Admiral Filipp S. Oktabrsky’s Soviet garrison. The result was a rapid advance with very modest losses.
