'War of Nerves' was a British deception, planned by Lieutenant Colonel Dudley W. Clarke’s Middle Eastern deception apparatus, undertaken largely through the dissemination of rumours and almost wholly unsuccessful, designed to unsettle the Axis powers about British strength and intentions, and thereby induce them to disperse their own forces more widely and therefore more sparsely than was necessary (February 1941).
