Operation Wintersport (i)

winter sport

'Wintersport' (i) was a German unrealised plan for the capture of Maykop and its oilfields in the area to the north of the north-western end of the Caucasus mountains in the southern USSR (3 November 1941/August 1942).

The plan was created under the overall supervision of Generalfeldmarschall Gerd von Rundstedt’s Heeresgruppe 'Süd' by the staffs of Generaloberst Ewald von Kleist’s 1st Panzerarmee and Generaloberst Hermann Hoth’s 17th Army, and was later updated and attempted as 'Edelweiss' (i).
