The 'Battle of Sagami Bay' was fought between US and Japanese naval forces in the course of a US anti-shipping raid off the tip of Boso peninsula (22/23 July 1945).
This was the last surface action of World War II, and in it the US Navy’s Destroyer Squadron 61 engaged a Japanese convoy consisting of two freighters escorted by submarine chaser Ch-42 and the minesweeper W-1. In this night action, the US destroyers, under the command of Captain T. H. Hederman, sank a freighter, the 800-ton Hakutetsu Maru No. 5 and damaged another, the 6,919-ton Enbun Maru. The Japanese escorts were not damaged.
