'Bruteforce' was a British simulated beach reconnaissance undertaking in the mouth of the Salween river (29/30 March 1945).
This and other operations in eastern Burma were designed to persuade the Japanese that the objectives of Lieutenant General Sir William Slim’s British 14th Army were considerably more extensive than the current advance down the line of the Irrawaddy river to Rangoon, and therefore that they should disperse their forces more widely than was warranted or indeed militarily sensible given the real nature of the British objective.
