Operation Chickweed

'Chickweed' was a British naval gunfire bombardment by the destroyers Quail and Quilliam, supported by a number of motor torpedo boats, of German positions in the area of Vasto in the Abruzzo region on the eastern side of Italy (3 November 1943).

The operation was undertaken as a feint designed to persuade the Germans that there was to be an amphibious assault in the area, and thereby ease the task of Lieutenant General C. F. Keightley’s V Corps of General Sir Bernard Montgomery’s 8th Army as it fought its way north along the coast to break the 'Barbara-Linie' defences.
