Operation Clearance

'Clearance' was a British deception reconnaissance of an airfield near Setul in the extreme south-western part of Thailand (April 1945).

The undertaking was one of a series in south-eastern Burma and south-western Thailand intended to suggest to the Japanese that the focus of Lieutenant General Sir William Slim’s British 14th Army had switched from Rangoon, the capital of Burma, to an area farther to the east in order in order to cut the overland lines of communication on which Lieutenant General Masakazu Kawabe’s Burma Area Army was dependent, and to place the British and Indian forces in a better position to start operations against Thailand and Malaya.
