'Coppers' was a British unrealised psychological warfare scheme, devised by part of Lieutenant Colonel Dudley W. Clarke’s Egypt-based 'A' Force, to doctor captured Axis explosives and ammunition (July 1941).
The scheme was designed to make the Germans and Italians distrust their own supplies of ammunition and explosives by doctoring captured items of this nature so that they exploded the moment they were fired, thereby destroying artillery and killing or wounding nearby troops.
