'Elbrus' was the German undertaking within 'Edelweiss' (i) (originally 'Blau III') to reach the summit of Mt Elbrus, at 18,510 ft (5642 m) the highest peak of the Caucasus mountain range (14/21 August 1942).
The unit involved in this propaganda undertaking was Hauptmann Heinz Groth und Gämmerler’s Hochgebirgjägerkompanie 'Groth' (Groth high mountain combat company) specially created from men with mountaineering experience and serving with Generalleutnant Hubert Lanz’s 1st Gebirgsdivision and Generalleutnant Karl Eglseer’s 4th Gebirgsdivision of General Rudolf Konrad’s XLIX Gebirgskorps within Generaloberst Richard Ruoff’s 17th Army. On reaching the summit the party raised the German flag above it.
