'Finkenfang' was a German operation against partisans in the area of General Heinrich Clössner’s 2nd Panzerarmee within Generalfeldmarschall Günther von Kluge’s Heeresgruppe 'Mitte' in the region to the south of Bryansk in the German-occupied western USSR (4/7 May 1943).
The undertaking was designed to assure the security of the railway links supplying Generaloberst Walter Weiss’s 2nd Army and Generaloberst Walter Model’s 9th Army, which were the two most important elements of Heeresgruppe 'Mitte' on the northern shoulder of the forthcoming 'Zitadelle'.
