Operation Garfield

'Garfield' was an Allied radio deception operation to support the attempt of Lieutenant General Mark W. Clark’s US 5th Army to cross the lower reaches of the Volturno river (mid-October 1943).

The operation sought to suggest that Major General G. W. E. J. Erskine’s British 7th Armoured Division had been withdrawn from the front to be prepared for an amphibious 'left-hook' round the western end of the German defences in central Italy.
