Operation Goeben

(19th century Prussian general and name of the German battle-cruiser which operated in the Mediterranean in World War I)

'Goeben' was the German first effort to despatch six U-boats from French ports into the Mediterranean via the Strait of Gibraltar (16 September/5 October 1941).

The boats were U-75, U-79, U-97, U-331, U-371 and U-559, which neither lost any of their own number nor sank any ship during their passage into the eastern end of the Mediterranean.
