'Günther' (ii) was a German operation against partisans in the area of Manily in the Smolensk region of Belorussia in the German-occupied western USSR (2/14 July 1943).
At this time the Germans were heavily involved in preparations for the launch of 'Zitadelle' around Kursk, and were very concerned about the threat to their rear-area communications posed by a severe resurgence of Soviet partisan activities, inspired for this very purpose by the Soviet high command in Moscow.
