Operation Himmelfahrt

Assumption

'Himmelfahrt' was a German special forces operation designed to prevent any Allied movement of forces and agents across the Great St Bernard, Little St Bernard and other passes in the western part of the Alps, and as such represented an effort to halt the advance of French forces from Chamonix and the Col de la Seigne into the upper parts of the Aosta valley (8 January/17 February 1945).
