Operation Impersonal (ii)

'Impersonal' (ii) was the Allied occupation of Batavia on the island of Java, the capital of the Netherlands East Indies, after the surrender of Japan (28/30 September 1945).

Initially a small party provided by the Special Operations Executive’s Force 136/'Mastiff' group was delivered by parachute on 8 September to make preliminary arrangements for the arrival of larger forces and to supervise the surrendering Japanese, who were ordered to maintain order.

The first of the major element’s components to arrive was No. 6 RAPWI (Recovery of Allied Prisoners of War and Internees) Control Staff delivered by the heavy cruiser Cumberland under the overall command of Rear Admiral W. R. Patterson pending the arrival of Lieutenant General Sir Philip Christison and the formations of his Indian XV Corps.
