'Ironside' (ii) was a US deception plan designed to draw German attention and forces away from the 'Overlord' campaign in Normandy by suggesting that US forces from the continental USA were about to make an amphibious assault on the area of Bayonne and Bordeaux in south-western France with the aid of local resistance forces (July 1944).
Undertaken only only a minor scale as a logical successor to 'Ironside' (i), 'Ironside II' relied on 'special measures' such as double agents to convey to the Germans a number of suggestions such as the arrival of army heavy bridging equipment in the port of New York. 'Ironside II' appears to have exercised little or no effect on the Germans, who had in fact withdrawn virtually all but garrison troops from south-western France by this time.
