'Maigewitter' (i) was a German operation by elements of Generaloberst Hans-Georg Reinhardt’s 3rd Panzerarmee of Generalfeldmarschall Günther von Kluge’s Heeresgruppe 'Mitte' against partisans in the area of Vitebsk and Gorodok in the Belorussia region of the German-occupied western USSR (17/21 May 1943).
This was an important rail centre area for German supplies at the northern end of the Eastern Front, and was one of the major objectives earmarked for General Andrei I. Eremenko’s Kalinin Front in the Soviet offensives planned for the late summer of 1943.
