Operation Mars (iii)

'Mars' (iii) was a US Army task force created for service in Burma, and officially designated as the 5332nd Brigade (Provisional) (second half of 1944).

With a strength of 3,000 men, this was a long-range penetration group activated in India during July 1944 under the command of Brigadier General Thomas Arms. The 'Mars' Task Force comprised the 612th Field Artillery Battalion, 124th Cavalry, Chinese 1st Regiment and 475th Infantry, the last containing personnel surviving service with 'Merrill’s Marauders', otherwise the 'Galahad' Task Force. The 'Mars' Task Force took part in Lieutenant General Daniel I. Sultan’s Northern Combat Area Command offensive, originally launched by Lieutenant General Joseph W. Stilwell from northern Burma in October 1943, one of its principal objectives being to clear the Japanese-held Burma Road. When this had been accomplished, in February 1945, the 'Mars' Task Force was withdrawn to China.
