Operation MAZ5

'MAZ5' was a British naval decoy operation off Ras Gibeisa and Ras el Daba, between El Hamam and Zawya Sidi Musa to the east of Mersa Matruh on the north coast of Egypt in order to destabilise the Axis troops in this rear behind the front just as the British 'Supercharge' (i) break-out in the 2nd Battle of El Alamein was starting (1/2 November 1942).

Four motor torpedo boats simulated troop landings, launched rafts, fired flares and released balloons, and these successfully drew Axis fire. The motor torpedo boats suffered neither damage nor casualties.
