'Page' was the US geographical rather than operational codename for Fanning island in the Line islands group in the Pacific Ocean(1941/45).
Fanning island is a comparatively large atoll some 153 miles (246 km) to the north-west of Christmas island in the Line islands group of the central part of the Pacific Ocean. The atoll is approximately circular, 9.5 miles (15 km) long and 6.5 miles (10.5 km) wide with a land area of 13 sq miles (33.75 km˛). The large but foul lagoon is accessed by a pass on the atoll’s south-western side, leading to a deeper anchorage, English Harbour, which is suitable only for shallow-draft vessels. The climate is very wet, with rainfall typically 100 in (250 cm) a year, and the population was some 250 persons of the local population as well as about 30 Europeans and Chinese. Its only product was copra.
The island was British territory and had a station of the cable linking Canada and the Fiji islands group in 1916. In 1941 it was garrisoned by a platoon of New Zealand troops and one battery of artillery, which were relieved by a company of the US 21st Infantry on 26 April 1942. Though Fanning island was potentially a target for the Japanese early in the war, the defeat of the Japanese 'Mi' (ii) in the Battle of Midway meant that there was little threat to the island for the rest of the war.
