Operation Robertsbridge

'Robertsbridge' was the British relocation of many of the Royal Navy’s service elements from Alexandria on the north coast of Egypt to Haifa on the coast of Palestine in response of the threat posed by the Axis forces' 'Aïda' advance into the western part of Egypt, leading to the 1st Battle of El Alamein (June 1942).

The undertaking was ordered by Admiral Sir Henry Harwood, only recently arrived as commander of the Mediterranean Fleet, and was a decidedly precipitate move which did much to undermine the morale of the Mediterranean Fleet and other British service personnel in the Middle Eastern theatre.
