'Siegfried' (iv) was a U-boat wolfpack operation in the central part of the North Atlantic against the ON.207 and HX.262 convoys (11/16 January 1942).
This small wolfpack comprised U-71, U-93 and U-571, and operated off Gibraltar and the Azores island group. The boats attempted to attack the HG.78 convoy, but were driven off by the convoy’s escort group under the command of Lieutenant Commander A. A. Tait, whose destroyer Hesperus sank Oberleutnant Horst Elfe’s U-93 on 15 January. The boats therefore managed to sink no ships.
