Operation SM (i)

'SM' (i) was the designation of Allied convoys (together with a numerical suffix) plying the route from Singapore or Batavia, Netherlands East Indies, to Fremantle, Australia (December 1941/February 1942).

The first of these three convoys was SM.1 of 13/16 December 1941 from Singapore for dispersal, and comprised the 5,172-ton US American Robin, 9,511-ton US Magnolia, 6,479-ton British Neleus and 5,319-ton British Silverbeech, together with I Kwang, Marudu and Mobil Fuel. The last was SM.3 which departed Batavia on 20 February with the 7,905-ton British Adrastus, 8,917-ton British City of Manchester, 7,475-ton British Marella, 6,181-ton Dutch Phrontis, and Prominent.
