'Spätlese' (i) was a German operation against partisans in the region to the north of Smolensk in the German-occupied western USSR (18/21 September 1942).
The operation was undertaken in an effort to eliminate the Moscow-controlled partisan forces which were seriously affecting the flow of supplies (and also the rear-area security) of elements of Generalfeldmarschall Günther von Kluge’s Heeresgruppe 'Mitte', most notably Generaloberst Heinrich-Gottfried von Vietinghoff-Scheel’s 9th Army in the Rzhev salient.
