'Verteidigung West' was the German strategic plan, initially schemed as 'Grenzsicherung West', for the defence of western Germany against any major Allied offensive from France (18 January 1939 onward).
The task was entrusted to General Erwin von Witzleben’s Heeresgruppenkommando 2, which became General Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb’s Heeresgruppe 'C' on 26 August 1939 with orders to yield no German territory at all.
