Operation Westwall (i)

'Westwall' (i) was a U-boat wolfpack operation in the Atlantic Ocean to the west of the British Isles (2/12 March 1942).

The wolfpack comprised U-87, U-135, U-213, U-553, U-569, U-701, U-752 and U-753, and for the loss of none of its own number sank five trawlers (2,594 tons).

On 6 March Kapitänleutnant Horst Degen’s U-701 sank the 213-ton British Rononia, on 7 March the same boat sank the 349-ton Færoese Nyggjaberg, on 8 March Oberleutnant Hans-Peter Hinsch’s U-569 sank the 984-ton British Hengist, and on 8 and 11 March Degen’s U-701 sank the 541-ton British Notts County and 507-ton Stella Capella. These last two were in British naval service as anti-submarine trawlers.
