Operation Avenger (ii)

'Avenger' (ii) was an Allied cover plan designed to facilitate a possible advance by General Sir Bernard Montgomery’s British 21st Army Group into northern Germany by suggesting that the main Allied thrust would in fact be made farther to the south by Lieutenant General George S. Patton’s US 3rd Army and Lieutenant General Jacob L. Devers’s Allied 6th Army Group across the line of the upper Rhine river (October 1944).

The plan was not implemented as the Allies failed to decide at this time whether it would be the northern or the southern general offensive which would have the strategic primacy.
