'Lauffeuer' was a German and Croat operation against the partisan forces of Marshal Josip Broz Tito in the area south of Sid and near Ilok in the Syrmian region of the puppet state of Croatia in German-occupied Yugoslavia (17/19 February 1944).
In an effort to pin and destroy the partisan forces concentrated in the area in question, the Germans used elements of Generalleutnant Josef Brauner von Haydringen’s 42nd Jägerdivision and elements of the Panzerabteilung zbV 12, possibly supported by a small number of Croat units. Apparently carried out without gaining contact with any partisan units, the operation represented another effort to open and secure an imperilled supply road, in this instance that connecting the port of Ilok on the Danube river through the western extension of the Fruska Gora (mountain region) to Sid in the heart of Syrmia.
