'Zugvogel' was a German naval operation to move the WBS-1 floating weather station, whose senior meteorologist was one Hofmann and which was based on the converted 620-ton trawler Wuppertal, from Greenland toward Spitsbergen (March/December 1944).
The ship became trapped in the ice on 8 October, about 120 miles (195 km) to the south of the North Pole, after suffering an engine failure. Radio transmissions from the station ended one month later, and the vessel disappeared without trace.
